Indie vs. Independent

I got asked if we were an indie band the other day. I responded no, but we are independent. I was then asked the obvious, ‘what’s the difference’? To me, indie is now a genre all to itself, one that is loaded with bands & artists that are all trying to sound alike: boring, unimaginitive, random, simple & usually not worth hearing the whole track beginning to end. Maybe an indie band will have one cool song by accident, but then it’s right back to dullsville. Right now we get to have a genre all to ourselves, so why mess with that? Precisely my definition of independent.
